NUTRITION, which essentially means, BALANCED RATION, is what production profit is all about!

For the dairyman the most important aspect of production is HEALTH and the next important aspect is DRY COW NUTRITION.

DRY COW

Unfortunately, the dry cow program is the most abused phase in the dairy herd program. This 45-60 day period in the production cycle sets up the program for success or failure of the dairy herd production. The goal is to restore the cow in the last phase of lactation so that she will dry off in about the same condition in which we want her to calve. It is important to remember that if the cow has insufficient energy intake in late lactation, then this low reserve of body energy will decrease milk production in the upcoming lactation.

There are basically three phases in the dry cow program

1) The first two weeks where the intake needs to be high fiber, vitamins and minerals,

2) The middle four weeks where the intake needs to be roughage, energy and protein and

3) The final two to three weeks should prepare the cow’s digestive system for the lactation ration.

It is important that the rumen micro-organisms in these cows be adapted to the feeds being fed to the milking cows. SLOWLY convert the cows to the lactation grain ration. Ideally, the separate feeding from the lactating cows should be done. However, a limited amount of TMR may be fed to the dry cows. This would maintain a similarity of their upcoming lactating program. The remainder of their dry matter intake should consist of low quality but HIGH scratch factor roughage, preferably long-stemmed, non-legume hay.
